The Shipping Forecast

// 2022 // University Project

The Shipping Forecast is a beloved service on BBC Radio 4, providing weather updates for the seas surrounding the British Isles. The seas are divided into thirty-one distinct areas, each with its own unique name. Over time, the Shipping Forecast has developed a cult following, often parodied, and even used by many as a sleep aid.

I aimed to reinvent it as an eye-catching brand that would capture the attention of commuters and attract a fresh wave of listeners. The blocked lettering draws inspiration from stacks of containers on cargo ships, while the typeface used—Univers Ultra Condensed—is commonly seen on those containers. Additionally, I incorporated waveform patterns to represent isobars, visualising air pressure, which intertwine with the type to mimic the fluid movement of the wind. This design seeks to breathe new life into the Shipping Forecast, making it both visually striking and conceptually connected to its maritime roots.
